I am not a makeup expert, and tend towards a more "natural" makeup look. I thought it would be fun to play with other options outside my usual 1 or 2 neutral color routine, and loved that this came with instructions for those of us without the makeup artist gene.
My "eye manual" in the "everyday eye edition" arrived, and the first thing I noticed was it was larger than I expected. It is roughly 6"x 7 1/4" when the kit is closed. I opened it to find all the eye shadows whole and unbroken, and was again pleasantly surprised to see they were larger than expected at 1" square for each color (12 colors in all). There is a clear overlay that covers the shadows that also labels each one for reference.
There was also a handy elastic band to hold the cover closed when not in use, and easy-to-follow instructions for a day and night look on the inside cover. They don't tell you what colors to use specifically, just to use a light, medium, or dark shade and where to apply them. I wouldn't have minded specific color instructions as well, but the instruction sheet opens and there is a spot to write down which color combinations you tried and liked to reference in the future.
I wasn't really impressed with the included eye liner or eye shadow applicator . The applicator is the usual generic small, stiff foam on a plastic stick, which in my case broke during the 1st use. I'd suggest getting brushes anyway for easier application. The eye liner seemed hard to apply to me, but I don't normally wear eyeliner so I have little to compare it to. It just didn't glide at all, and I don't have a sharpener so it will be useless soon anyway.
The quality of the shadows seems nice as well. At $5 for 12 good-sized shadows they aren't going to be top quality, but they apply easily and the color seems to wear well. I honestly don't buy expensive "high quality" eye shadow, so this seemed equal to typical drug store brands to me.
All-in-all I was personally very pleased with the kit. I ordered another one that is back ordered (I think the "natural eye edition"), but look forward to trying it as well, and will definitely consider ordering the other kits, even if only to experiment with different colors and improve my technique.
I purchased this set more for the eyeshadows rather than the instructions provided. The colors are a great basic set. Each color is very large, so the value for the money is great
